TIMBUKTU

Apartments Restaurant & Bar

Summit Road Mt Buller Victoria 2008

Timbuktu is a 3 level building with 3 large apartments and Snowpony restaurant on Bourke St Ski Run.

Construction is post-tensioned concrete platforms on 15m piles to retain Twin Towers behind. The concrete frame and columns are expressed and split through the window line to prevent cold bridging. The roof is designed to hold several metres of snow (an excellent thermal insulator) then domed and heated to prevent ice damming and allow constant drainage from the underside.

The design embraces concrete as a thermal mass and internal finish by wrapping the walls with insulated ironbark cladding. HPG's interiors extend the contemporary alpine palette using sandstone floors with timber and cowhide wall linings. The log wall in Snowpony restaurant anchors the space.
